Awards celebrate the young talent in the Western Bay of Plenty and inspire them to become future innovators of Aotearoa. yia! is actively shaping the workforce of tomorrow by equipping students in local schools with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving work environment.

The yia! programme is the only programme in the Bay of Plenty that uses the Design Thinking framework, and is the largest innovation programme in Aotearoa. During the programme, rangatahi are empowered to take a real-world solution from idea to prototype in just a few weeks!

How to find a wonderful idea | Ok go

Where does OK Go come up with ideas like dancing in zero gravity, performing in ultra-slow motion or constructing a warehouse-sized Rube Goldberg machine for their music videos? Between live performances of "This Too Shall Pass" and "The One Moment," lead singer and director Damian Kulash takes us inside the band's creative process, showing us how to look for wonder and surprise.

The Design Squad Global

Filled with loads of fun ideas for designing and building, The Design Squad is a great place to get inspired! Featuring exciting future ideas like vertical forests, shoes made from ocean plastics and recycled skateboards.

What is Design Thinking?

The Young Innovators Award is a Design Thinking programme, and it uses the steps of creativity to develop ideas into prototypes. Design Thinking is a 5-step process to develop meaningful ideas that solve real problems for a particular group of people. The process is taught in top design and business schools around the world. It has brought many businesses lots of happy customers and helped entrepreneurs from all around the world, to solve problems with innovative new solutions. The ocean cleanup project

Learn and be inspired by one of our favourite innovators, the then 19-year-old Boyan Slat. His Ocean CleanUp projects are still ongoing and have removed millions of kilograms of waste from the oceans.
